If you aren’t using super sharp hooks, you can expect to lose a bunch of fish, possibly even your trophy. There are a few things that go into why you should be using sharp hooks to catch trophy bass.
If you are out there on the water, fishing with a hook that wouldn’t even pierce your skin, you can expect to lose some trophy fish, better yet, a lot! Making sure that your hooks are super sharp is the only way you can ensure the bass doesn’t throw it, leaving you with that empty feeling, in your stomach, and on your rod. It has happened to me time and time again, and I faithfully check my hooks.
Take a look at the barb on that dull hook. It isn’t sharp at all, and the point of the hook wouldn’t even pierce your skin. How is it suppose to pierce a fish’ tough mouth? If it does pierce it, it is going to leave a gaping hole, and the barb won’t catch on anything, letting the hook and bait come flying back at you. You don’t want to be in this situation, trust me.
When you have an ultra sharp Gamakatsu (pricey! but you get what you pay for!) or some cheaper Laser Sharp (just make sure you change them more often!) the hook tip pierces through a super tiny hole, and the barb then flexes the skin around it, instead of ripping it. This makes the perfect piercing, as there is hardly no entry wound. This super small “incision” means that the barb does its job, and the fish can’t throw the hook. This turns into you boating the biggest trophy fish of your life!
